FREE AND FORCED VORTEX APPARATUS

EXPERIMENTAL CAPABILITIES:
  1. Experiment to plot the shape of a free vortex by measurement of the surface profile co-ordinates, and thus verify that “vr = c” where v is the speed and “ r “ is the radius of the vortex
  2. Experiment to plot the surface profiles of various forced vortices’s formed under different speed conditions
  3. Verification of the formula “ h = w² r² / 2g” for forced vortices’s where h is the height of the surface of the water above the datum point, w is the vortex angular velocity and r is the vortex radius
FREE AND FORCED VORTEX APPARATUS

FREE AND FORCED VORTEX APPARATUS: allows students to study the vortex is generated via an impeller driven by a water jet.
The experimental unit consists of a transparent tank with nozzles, an impeller and various inserts on the water drain and a point gauge for detecting the vortex profiles.
The water moves spirally towards the center with streamline motion, so that, neglecting losses caused by viscosity, the energy per unit mass remains constant. The module consists of a cylindrical and transparent deposit with two inlet pipes diametrically opposed, with some inclination to give place to a whirl. The water is supplied and the flow measured using the hydraulic bench.
